According to The International Center for Reiki Training, Reiki is a Japanese technique that involves the laying over of universal energy from the practitioner’s palms to the patient to correct imbalances in the body and promote energy healing. 

The term Reiki is a combination of two Japanese words—rei, meaning God’s Wisdom or the Higher Power, and ki, meaning life force energy. Hence, Reiki means spiritually-guided life force energy. 

The earliest origins of Reiki are credited to Mikao Usui, a medical practitioner who discovered the root system of energy healing, which is now known as Reiki. Usui’s methods and traditions were passed through several masters of the technique. 

Energy healing aims to help with the flow of energy and get rid of blocks in a similar way as acupuncture or acupressure. Reiki treats the wholeness of a person, bringing many beneficial effects that include a sense of security and peace, as well as spiritual healing and self-improvement.

Since Reiki is a form of energy medicine, it’s best held in a peaceful setting, although it can be done anywhere. The client will be asked to either lie on a massage table or sit in a chair. Then, the practitioner will place their hands lightly on or over specific parts of the head, limbs, and torso. 

The practitioner will use different Reiki hand positions for roughly two to five minutes, and they can lay their hands over 20 different parts of the body. In case the patient has an injury, they will place their hands just above it. 

The transmission of energy occurs when the practitioner lays their hands on or over a body part. As it takes place, their hands may have a warm or tingling sensation. They will maintain the hand position until they sense that the energy has stopped flowing.  When they feel that the energy in their hands has become less intense, they will move onto the next area of the body. 

Some Reiki practitioners may use chakra healing wands and crystals for healing and protecting a home from any negative energy.
