Simplify: Live with Purpose

By Sandra Bevins Hughes

I’d like to speak about Life Purpose today—in the simplest terms.

For me at this moment, purpose is about what keeps me going each day, my routines, my joys, what makes me content. I think that upbringing, circumstances, what we do, how we spend our days and with whom informs our purpose and as those things shift and change over a lifetime-- so our purpose shifts, evolves and changes, as well. What about embracing simplicity right now?

After a major life transition: career change, starting a business, retirement or divorce, or honestly, any other major transition that you may be going through, you may struggle to find purpose in the midst of the chaos and uncertainty.

That is why I suggest focusing on what is most simple to name and appreciate right now.

-What keeps you going each day?

-What is your routine?

-What are your joys?

-What makes you content?

Focus in on those positives and allow them to pull you forward.

Take small steps and take as much time as you need to heal, and go as slowly as possible; before you know it those steps will be getting bigger and bigger and you will be back in your stride.

What if you view the simplest, most meaningful parts of your life right now within the context of this quotation by Ralph Waldo Emerson:

“When you do a thing, do it with all your might. Put your whole soul into it. Stamp it with your own personality. Be active, be energetic, be enthusiastic and faithful, and you will accomplish your objectives.”

What about focusing on your purpose from today onward with that quotation as a guide? What would that mean?

Do you think your daily routine, your joys, your encounters with others would take on a different level of importance and meaning?

Do you think that your level of appreciation for what you do have vs. what you no longer have would change?

I invite you to try this exercise and explore your purpose as you see it, at this point in time in your life!
